GET TO KNOW: ARC NADE
Arc Nade, aka Marcus Naden, is making a name for himself in the bassline community through his clean production and hard sound. We had a quick speak with him between his studies to find out who's behind the music:
You have to think big to get big!
For people who don’t know, what is some basic info about you?
Born in Nottingham. Studying Psychology and Business Management at Keele. Planning on moving to Manchester this summer to study at Manchester School of Electronic Music (SEM) and work. I'm 20 years-old.
How did you get into DJing?
I've been studying music for as long as I can remember. I used to play the trombone to a very high standard and was in a couple of bands throughout school time. Then at uni I made friends with a lot of people studying music, and started to learn bits about music production from them. This motivated me to want to create my own music too, so for the last two years I have been teaching myself as much as I can. DJing actually came as a bonus with this, as I joined societies at my university and they taught me that if you want to play at nights you have to be able to mix as well as produce. Normally people get into DJing then producing, so I find it quite fascinating how mine was the other way around.
How would you describe your style?
I wouldn't say I have a style. I just appreciate sounds that work well together and try to be as unique as possible at the same time. New and interesting is always better than using the same samples or synths over and over.
‘Commander’ was a sick tune, making more jump up?
If you thought that was sick, I can't even begin where to place the current drum and bass track I have been working on. It's called "Midnight Calling" and should be out within the next couple of months.
If you had to choose one genre what would it be?
Bassline all day everyday.
How did you link up with Kage?
Through an event called Bassland. He's one of the soundest guys out there and whenever we produce a collab it goes off without fail. You should hear our latest one "War Dance", no one is ready for that tune.
What’s going on over at DMK?
DMK is a society at Keele which runs all things underground music. We host raves at our student union to provide an alternative night to the typical cheesy nights normally on at the SU. We also do things like student spins etc, where we try to get as many students involved with DJing if they have an interest in the subject. I'm the treasurer of the society.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
Too many to name. But recently I've been delving into a lot of bass house. If you find the right bass house buried deep into Soundcloud it's popping off hardddd.
What are you aspirations as a DJ?
At the moment I am keen to be signed to an agency. I want to start getting more frequent bookings now that I have a solid ground in the industry, and have pretty much perfected my mixing and set lists. Then who knows, maybe one day have my own tour. You have to think big to get big!
Who are your musical inspirations?
I listen to every genre of music.
Bassline: Zero, Usual Suspects, Holy Goof, Dr Cryptic, Off Me Nut crew, TQD.
Bass: Phlegmatic Dogs, CODES.
Dubstep: Swiss, Plastician, Spyro, Commodo, Egoless.
DnB: Keeno, Keeno, Keeno.
Classical: Frederic Chopin, Ludovico Einaudi.
Electronic: Brian Eno.
Indie Rock: Theme Park, Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, Panic At The Disco, Everything Everything.
Metal: Enter Shakari.
There are too many for house haha.
Keele nightlife compared to other cities?
It's not the best, we're trying our best to bring a better night life with DMK but it can't compare to the big cities.
Do you want to make music a full time thing?
I'm still not sure. There are so many opportunities in life and I'm still not certain what it is I want to do. Hopefully attending SEM in Manchester will give me a clear idea of my end goals.
Plans for the rest of the year?
Graduate (hopefully) and move to Manchester. In terms of music, I want to realistically be releasing new content at least once a month! But at the same time I want every release to be substantial.
